Monday 4th July 2016 –
Wick
It rained
and rained in the morning; I took advantage of the nearby fuel facility in the
harbour workshop and filled up with 45 litres in containers at £1 per
litre. During the process we got soaked.

In the
afternoon it began to set fair and off for another tour of the town; of note
was this flower clock, resembling the one in Edinburgh but unfortunately the
time piece did not work.
A visit to
the bank and shops before I ventured up to the whiskey distillery of ‘Old Pulteney’,
the most northerly distillery on the Scottish mainland. I did not have enough time to do the tour and
found the whiskey very expensive in the shop, though I did buy a couple of
mementos.
At the
chandler’s back in harbour I did buy a Caithness courtesy flag for the boat, Wick is in the county of Caithness.
At 15.30,
the new crew member Syd Trudgen arrived; he hails from Penzance in Cornwall and
spent two days travelling from one of the country to the other, a journey of
1000 miles.
The first
day he travelled by train direct to Newcastle, spent the night at my home
before today, using my car to drive nearly 400 miles to Wick. Most importantly he had brought the newly
purchased auto-helm.
With the car
we drove to the nearest Co-op and stocked up with provisions. At 17.00 Jack took over the car for the drive
back to his home in Newcastle.
Syd and I
went to Weatherspoon’s for a meal of scampi, steak and chips while catching up
with old times. We both used to sail
together as Engineers on the tall ship ‘Stavros S. Niarchos’.
Back on
board for 22.30, the crew change had been a success and thank you very much
Jack for getting ‘Selene’ this far on her voyage.
