Stonehaven to Peterhead – Day 7
At 09.00 we
let go of the catamaran ‘Temora’ and were on our way and quickly unfurled the
genoa, as we passed the pier end.
The auto
helm when engaged, once again through a wobbler, so we hand steered for a while
before it decided to behave itself.
With
the full main sail, we happily sailed close in up the coast, watching the main
road up to Aberdeen busily coping with the traffic and the occasional train
winding its way through the green pastures above the cliffs.
Aberdeen
Tanker at anchor
By twelve of
clock, we were passing Aberdeen, the capital of the UK’s oil and gas industry
with five ships lying at anchor.
We tried our
hand at goose-winging the sails, while listening and watching the helicopters
ferrying passengers to and from the distant oil and gas installations way
beyond our horizon.
Marina
At 16.00
called Peterhead harbour control which is compulsory, for permission to proceed
to the marina and were alongside the pontoon for 16.30.
The
facilities at this marina are very good and I enjoyed a wonderful shower.
Half an hour’s walk and you are the town
centre, this is mainly a fishing port, where the biggest amount of white fish
are landed anywhere in Europe.
We found
the ‘Cross Keys’ a Weatherspoon’s pub, a very large nice place and enjoyed a
meal of Aberdeen Angus steak while Jack had his mixed grill.
A walk back
in the fading light to the marina for some night caps and enjoyed a spectacular
night sky before retiring for the night.
An excellent
day, sunny, on passage at sea for seven and half hours, of which, six were
under full sail.
