Arbroath to Stonehaven – Day 5
In the early
morning shower, Jack managed to set off the pull cord alarm which brought the
harbour master along, who assured him it happens a lot of the time.
We left at
09.00 and with a favourable south westerly wind made our way passed the lobster
pots outside Arbroath.
Two miles to the
north and among the spectacular cliff scenery is the tiny, drying harbour of
Auchmithie, a tiny fishing place, home of the original Arbroath smokie.
| Ruins of Dunottar Castle |
The
auto-helm was working fine as we followed the imposing cliffs, the sailing came
to an end as the wind died at 14.15.
Engine on and motored the rest of the way.
To the south
of Stonehaven on the cliff top are the splendid ruins of Dunottar Castle.
| Alongside 'Temora' |
With the
kind permission from the harbour master, we were allowed to lie alongside the
catamaran ‘Temora’
.
On our
arrival at 16.00, we were met by a cheering chap, waving a large Scottish flag
welcoming us to Stonehaven. It was Jack’s
cousin Bill Emsley.
Ashore for
19.00 and inside the harbour ‘Marine Hotel’, where we dined on tomato soup,
followed by beef stew and chips. While
watching the European Football Championships match of England versus Iceland;
the first half not going too well.
At
19.00, we moved next door to the ‘Ship Inn’ and met Jack’s cousin Bill, they
caught up with old times, while England got beat in the football; well done
Iceland.
Back on
board for at 23.30 for a few nightcaps and bed at 01.00.
A fine day
trip looking towards the imposing cliffs, and Jack met up again with his cousin whom he
had not seen for a lot of years, a good day.
